Why Libraries Are Crucial: A York University Perspective

By: Iman Qasimi

Welcome to York University Libraries! Whether you're a first-year student or a seasoned scholar, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on why libraries are more than just a collection of books; they’re the heart of academic and community life.

As a second-year student in Information Technology and a Student Success Mentor at York University Libraries, I’ve experienced firsthand how these spaces transform your university journey. Libraries are essential hubs of knowledge, support, and innovation. Here’s why they matter so much, and why York University’s libraries stand out.

Libraries: More Than Just Books

At York, the libraries are multi-functional spaces designed to meet diverse student needs. Yes, you’ll find an extensive collection of physical books, but that’s just the beginning. The libraries house cutting-edge technology, digital resources, workshops, and study zones dedicated to differing student needs.

Scott Library for instance, bustling with energy and collaboration is a true reflection of York’s diversity. On the other hand, Steacie Science and Engineering Library offers a serene space for deep focus. The newly opened Markham Campus Library is an intimate environment, blending advanced resources with a strong sense of community, while Bronfman Business Library is a serene space buzzing with the energy of similarly dedicated students. The Frost Library at the Glendon campus, is known for its welcoming atmosphere and provides invaluable support for students in both English and French languages - bienvenue à la bibliothèque Frost!

Libraries are not just places to consume knowledge—they’re spaces where students create, innovate, and grow.

Support Tailored for Success

One of the standout features of York University Libraries is the personalized support available to students. Research assistants are your best friends when tackling assignments, helping you sift through the vast digital archives and databases.

As a mentor, I’ve seen students’ confidence grow simply by attending a one-on-one session with library staff. Whether it’s mastering citations, narrowing down a research topic, or learning about tools like generative AI, York University Libraries make academic success achievable.

A Space for Connection and Community

At York, libraries foster collaboration. Group study rooms provide perfect spaces for brainstorming and project discussions. Workshops hosted by the library aren’t just educational—they’re opportunities to meet peers and feel connected to the wider university community.

I’ve met some of my closest friends during casual study sessions or library-hosted events. It’s a space where academic and personal connections blend seamlessly.

A Beacon for Mental Well-Being

University life can be stressful, and it’s important to find ways to manage that stress. That’s where the library comes in. At York University Libraries, you’ll find dedicated de-stress stations, where you can take a break from studying and recharge. Whether it’s a quiet corner for reflection or using calming resources, these spaces are designed to help you maintain balance during stressful times. Additionally, the library staff—including mentors like me—are always ready to lend a listening ear or guide you toward mental health resources that can support your well-being.

Driving Innovation and Equity

York University Libraries are aligned with the university’s broader mission of addressing global challenges like sustainability and inequality. With its emphasis on accessibility and equity, the libraries ensure every student—regardless of background—can thrive. From inclusive programming to resources tailored for diverse needs, these spaces are intentionally designed to empower all learners. Did you know YUL has a dedicated unit, Library Accessibility Services, that ensures students with print disabilities have access to their course reading materials in accessible formats?

Final Thoughts

York University Libraries are far more than a place to borrow books or cram for exams. They are dynamic spaces of growth, support, and community that are integral to the university experience.

So, the next time you step into a York library, remember: you’re not just entering a buildingyou’re stepping into a world of opportunities designed to help you succeed.

Don’t forget, the Student Success Mentor team, including myself, are here to help you navigate it all. Don’t hesitate to stop by and say hello when you see us in the Libraries—I’d love to hear how the libraries are shaping your York journey.
