Years of collaborative efforts by York University Libraries’ faculty, staff, librarians and the executive team have created a space that empowers students to learn, design, and create at York University’s new Markham Campus Library.
The library team shaped this innovative and inclusive space by overseeing the integration of academic programming for the Markham campus, adapting policies and procedures for the Making and Media Creation Lab (MMCL), and enhancing library access services. They collaborated with Markham UIT to select cutting-edge equipment, design curriculum for digital and information literacy, and establish experiential learning opportunities.
The new facility drives technology-rich learning and offers:
- A large Makerspace with 3D printers, CNC milling machines, laser cutting and engraving machines and vinyl and textile craft machines;
- A Gaming and Visualization Room;
- adaptive labs;
- media creation equipment and spaces available for bookings; and
- technology-enhanced group-study rooms.
Generous support from donors John Solomos, Susan Wong and Markham Centre Realty Inc, has transformed the library into a cornerstone of innovation and learning. Their contributions have enabled the development of dynamic spaces that inspire creativity and collaboration. One recent example of this impact is the MMCL’s collaboration with Professor Marissa Largo from the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design to produce a sewing tutorial. This project has provided students with a valuable hands-on learning opportunity and showcases the versatility of the library’s resources in supporting diverse academic and creative pursuits.
The Markham Campus Library meets the diverse needs of a dynamic student population, whether they’re creating tangible projects, producing digital media or looking for a space to study.
