Students showed up in droves at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 27th to meet therapy dogs, AJ and Jazz. The dogs were treated like rock stars by hundreds of students who lined up to take a turn petting the dogs. The canine lounge which was set up in an alcove off of the Scott Library Atrium as part of Let's Talk Mental Health day.
AJ and Jazz are trained as therapy dogs by St. John Ambulance. AJ is a nine year old golden retriever from Keswick. Jazz is a 6 year old tricolour rough-collie who has been a therapy dog for four years. In addition, there were two more dogs located in Vari Hall.
A visit with a therapy dog is a great way to deal with the daily stresses of student life. Puppy Palooza was scheduled to coincide with Let’s Talk Day, a day intended to raise awareness about mental health issues. The event was organized in conjunction with York's Health Education and Promotion Office.
Students responded enthusiastically to the event. Comments overheard include:
- “That’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!”
- “I feel like I’m meeting a celebrity.”
- “Let’s get back in line!” (from two students who had just finished visiting with Jazz)
Stay tuned for more therapy dog events in the future!
