Having a balanced life is a tricky thing to accomplish, especially when you're a student. Many York students are juggling school, part-time jobs, volunteer commitments, and a lengthy commute to campus. At the end of the day, you might not have as much time to hang out with family and friends and maintain a happy balance in your life.
Our newest book display highlights some of the resources we have in our collection that can help you learn about work-life balance techniques, strategies, and theories. While you may not be working full-time right now, these books can help you take a step back and examine your priorities and come up with a strategy for incorporating a better work-life balance in your day-to-day life.
This display includes a wide variety of books, such as:
- Sleeping with your Smartphone by Leslie A. Perlow
- This book is a must-read if you find yourself constantly checking your cellphone and unable to disconnect, even in early hours of the morning. Learn how to take a step back and truly disconnect so that you can renew your focus on the things that matter.
- Do More Great Work by Michael B. Stanier
- Do you find yourself getting bogged down in bureaucratic details and unable to move forward with actual work you want to do? This practical book will teach you 15 different exercises to help you focus your attention and get back to working on engaging projects and tasks.
- Stress and Work: Perspectives on Understanding and Managing Stress edited by D.M. Pestonjee and Satish Pandey
- This book is more academic in its focus and content, as it contains a series of thematic chapters that discuss issues such as positive stress management in the workplace, family and work conflict issues, as well as employee burnout.
- Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman
- While this book doesn't cover work-life balance issues, Kahneman discusses two different systems that govern the way humans think. The first system is based on intuitive, fast decision-making, while the second system is slower and focused on logical decision-making. This book can help you better understand the psychology behind human thought-processes and how we make decisions.
