Event: The Senate Committee on the Duff-Berdahl Report recommends to Senate that the number of students on Senate and Faculty Councils be increased. For the 1969-70 session, 10 students will sit on Senate. At the March 27 Senate meeting it is suggested that each of York's ten Student Councils submit the name of a student in good standing for nomination to Senate. York University Alumni Association selects Colin Campbell, Past President of the Alumni Society as its nominee for the 1969-1970 Senate.

Event: President Murray Ross' retirement is announced. Dr. Ross will finish his term of office on June 30, 1970. Event: The Senate approves the Gerstein Committee's recommendation on the separation of the Centre for Continuing Studies from Atkinson College, including the separation of the offices of the Dean of Atkinson and the Director of the Centre for Continuing Studies. The Senate releases a policy statement establishing Atkinson College as an equal academic partner with the other University faculties in the overall undertakings of the University.
At the same meeting, the Senate gives its approval to a "Diploma for Science Teachers" from the Centre for Continuing Studies.

Event: The Board of Governors authorizes the construction of College "E" (Stong College) and approves negotiations with the Ontario Housing Corporation for the construction of College "E" Residence.

Event: The Board of Governors receives for study the Report of the Presidential Committee on Glendon College chaired by Mr. George R. Gardiner. (The Report is released to the public on September 11.) "The Committee recommends that Glendon College be unreservedly endorsed as the small, residential liberal arts College of York University with a bi-cultural and public affairs orientation, operating on its present site and continuing in its existing relationship with the rest of the University."
The Board does not give its approval to a 34 page, Faculty Council Memorandum appealing for "special financial assistance" in order to allow the College to move ahead quickly in the next five years, "toward the full realization of its hopes and ambitions."
At the same meeting the Board of Governors approves of the appointment of Professor H.S. Crowe as Dean of Atkinson, effective July 1, 1969.

Event: The first of three 1969 Spring Convocations is held on the main campus on May 30. There is a Glendon Convocation on May 31, and a Special Law Convocation on June 10.
At the University Convocation honorary degrees are conferred on five prominent Canadians: Professor Maxwell Cohen, Professor Northrop Frye, Mr. Frederick Gardiner, and Mr. Mavor Moore. Professor Frye gives the Convocation address.

Event: The University hosts the Learned Society's Annual meeting for the first time from June 1 through June 17. 5,000 delegates attend the conference. "American Art in the Sixties" exhibition is mounted in Steacie Science Library. Assembled by York University's Art Curator, Michael Greenwood, the exhibition features works by Josef Albers, Alexander Calder, Jim Dine, Donald Judd, Roy Lichstein, Morris Louis, Marisol, Louise Nevelson, Kenneth Noland, Claes Odenberg, Jules Olitski, Robert Rauschenburg, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.

Event: A joint Law Convocation of the Osgoode Hall Law School and the Law Society of Upper Canada is held. 163 students in law receive their degrees. The Doctor of Laws honoris causa degree is conferred on six distinguished individuals from the fields of law and legal education: John D. Arnup, Esq. (past Treasurer of the Law Society of Upper Canada, responsible for many reforms in legal education in Ontario,) Lawrence C.B. Gower, Esq. Vice-Chairman of the Law Commission of England, Dr. Albert M. Sacks, Professor and Associate Dean of Law, Harvard Law School, The Honourable G.A. Gale, Chief Justice of Ontario, (in absentia) The Right Honourable J.R. Cartwright, Chief Justice of Canada, and the Honourable John N. Turner, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
In the afternoon, there is a dedication ceremony, and Chief Justice Gale officially opens the law school building. There are addresses by Dr. Gower and Dr. Sacks. A dinner in the evening, follows an open house for the law community.

Event: The York University Bookstore opens in Central Square with a book stock of 21,000 titles. It gives a 5 % discount to students, faculty and staff. Beth Appeldoorn is the Book Department Manager, Stephen Zalewski is the General Manager.

Event: York 10 programme proposals are presented to Senate. The festivities are intended to "...introduce, explain and interpret the function of York University to its various constituencies." This is to include an open house for the public with displays and discussions to demonstrate what York is all about in the fall term. In the winter term (1970), special lectures, forums, artistic and performing arts events are planned for the York community.

Event: The Green Bush Inn, the first student-run pub on campus, serves its first drink. The temporary location is in the Central Plaza next to the Toronto Dominion bank. The York Student Federation has a Green Bush Inn committee of students who want to preserve the original 139 year old Green Bush Inn building from demolition and transfer it to the York campus from its present location on Steeles Avenue, west of Yonge Street.

Event: Lectures begin. There are more than 21 500 students enrolled at York for the 1969-1970 academic year (over 7 700 full-time and 8 500 part-time degree students, 583 full-time and 588 part time Faculty of Graduate Studies students and 5,400 non-degree students at the Centre for Continuing Studies).
Osgoode Hall Law School begins its first classes on the York campus in its new facility. Students sit on Faculty Council and Committees of the Law School for the first time.
Atkinson College offers new honours programmes in Computer Science, Economics, English, Geography and Sociology.
The Faculty of Fine Arts register its first students.
The new Liberal Science programme is introduced in the Faculty of Science.
The "College Tutorial" is launched for first year Arts and Science undergraduates, as part of their general Education programme. Groups of ten students participate in informal, interdisciplinary tutorials led by College Fellows and intended to help students develop their critical and imaginative faculties. College tutorials are not graded, students are marked on a pass/fail basis.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers a mixture of M.A., M. Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in ten subject areas - Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, Economics, English, Experimental Space Science, Geography, History, Law, Mathematics, Philosophy, Psychology, Public Administration and Sociology.
The Council of the York Student Federation takes over from the York Student Council. Radio York, an internal broadcaster operated by students, goes on the air. The York Youth Clinic, offering assistance to students and others on matters of sexual education and drug awareness, is opened.
The Allied Institute is built on the York campus for the Canadian Association for the Mentally Retarded. It is a facility for core research and programme development in the National Institute on Mental Retardation.

Event: The Centre for Research on Environmental Quality is approved by Senate, and approved by the Board of Governors on October 14. It is established to promote multi-disciplinary, environmental research and study. Dr. Harold MacFarland is appointed Director. Other faculty members involved with the Centre are Dr. Morris Katz, Dr. C. David Fowle, and Dr, M.G. Boyer.
The Senate gives final reading to the statutory motion that the Department of Physical Education be established as a Department in the Faculty of Science. The Academic Policy and Planning Committee recommends that a Presidential Committee on the administrative relationship between the Department of Physical Education and Athletics at York University be established.

Event: The Honourable Robert H. Winters dies. On October 14, the Board asks the Chancellor to prepare for presentation a memorial citation outlining the first Chairman of the Board of Governors' achievements in the establishment and growth of York University.

Event: The Board of Governors approves in principle the agreement between York University and the Canadian International Development Agency whereby York is to provide economic assessment services, research and training to the government of Kenya. The negotiations between C.I.D.A. and York University are concluded at the end of November. A Project Planing and Evaluation Unit in the Kenyan Ministry of Economic Planning and Development is established for a period of five years. There will be a York field unit in Kenya, initially headed by the Kenya Project Director Prof. Tillo E. Kahn. Professor Andreas Papandreou will be responsible for the research and training of Kenyan Fellows at York.

Event: During the fall term, Principal Escott Reid Announces that he is retiring on December 31, 1969. Dr. Albert Tucker is appointed Principal-designate of Glendon College. He will take office on January 1, 1970.
