Event: The Centre for Continuing Education (a non-degree-granting educational body) offers its first courses from January through June 1967. A variety of lectures are offered to the community. Some of the courses are a single event, while others form a lecture series. Some of the courses offered are: "Great Art Centres of Italy," "Union - Management Problems," " Fundamentals of Supervision," an Institute at Geneva Park Centre, Lake Couchiching on "Group Process and Organizational Skills," sessions on " Instructional Techniques," and "College Preparatory Courses" in effective reading, writing, and time management skills.

Event: The UPACE group is appointed to plan and develop the Central Library and the Central Plaza. The architects Pentland & Baker are appointed to plan and design the Ice Rink Facilities. It is agreed that the Toronto - Dominion Bank will establish a branch in the Central Plaza building.

Event: The "Centennial Performing Arts Festival" is held. It is a student run festival featuring contemporary artists, critics, poets, musicians, filmmakers, and actors from the York community and beyond. Featured artists (including student artists) are: Leonard Cohen, Greg Curnoe, Dorothy Cameron, Dalton Camp, Zbigniew Blazeje, the Brian Browne Trio, Michael Collie, Keith Harrison, Joe Rosenblatt, Robert Fothergill, Michel Hirsch, Marion Redelaar, and Peter Dewdney. Mr. Ron Bloore, Director of Art, Dr. William McCauley, and Mrs. Mary Lou Goldfarb, Theatre Manager, are also active in organizing the Festival.

Event: The Frank Gerstein Lecture Series for 1967 examines the relationship between "Science and the University." The ticketed lectures are held from March 14 through April 4. The special lecturers include: the Right Honourable Lord Bowden of the University of Manchester, Dr. Leo Goldberg of Harvard University, Dr. Roger Gaudrey of the UniversitJ de MontrJal, and Professor Henry Morgenau of Yale University.

Event: The York University Debating Society, for its Centennial project, hosts a weekend of "International Debates on Vietnam" (March 31 - April 2). There are student-debating teams from twenty United States and Canadian universities, as well as from the University of Moscow. The first round of debates centers on the proposition, "Resolved: Canada should actively support the United States position in Vietnam." In the final round, between the University of Wyoming team and the University of Moscow team, students debate the resolution, "Resolved: that the United States should immediately withdraw its forces from Vietnam." Over 1 500 people attend the final debate, which is televised.

Event: The Senate Committee on Professional Faculties advises York to reconsider establishing a Faculty of Environmental Design, since both the University of Waterloo and Carlton University are in the process of setting up Faculties of Environmental Design at their respective universities.

Event: The University receives three special gifts. The joint venture group of architects (UPACE) donates $15 000 a year for three years to support a professorship in Environmental Design. Messrs. Osler and Hammond donate $30 000 to the University, with the interest to provide an annual lectureship in Economics. The International Nickel Company. of Canada gives the University the Calder maquette of the Expo '67 stabile. Later, it is placed next to the main entrance to Burton Auditorium.

Event: York announces the establishment of the Faculty of Fine Arts, the first of its kind in Canada. Four major departments are envisaged: Fine Arts, Drama, Music and Television. The programs will start in September 1968. A presidential committee is struck to select a Dean of Fine Arts. Dean Gillies is appointed Chairman, joining him are Dean Saywell, Dean Appley, Professor Heinrich, Professor Kilbourn and Dr. William McCauley.

Event: There is an announcement that on July 1, Professor Gerald Eric Le Dain, Q.C. will become Dean of the Faculty of Osgoode Hall Law School. On July 1, 1968, Osgoode Hall Law School will become affiliated with York University. Professor Alan W. Mewett, Acting Dean for 1967 will become Associate Dean.

Event: Atkinson College is officially opened by Mrs. Ruth Atkinson Hindmarsh, President of the Joseph E. Atkinson Charitable Foundation, and by her brother, Mr. Joseph S. Atkinson. This is the first college building exclusively for part-time students on a major Canadian university campus. Dr. John J. Deutsch, Chairman of the Economic Council of Canada, gives an opening address.

Event: At the Spring Convocation in the Tait McKenzie Physical Education Centre, 301 students are awarded degrees. Dr. Claude Bissell, President of the University of Toronto, is awarded Doctor of Laws, honoris causa "in recognition of his great interest and assistance, and that of the University of Toronto, in the establishment of York University." Dr. Bissell delivers the Convocation address. The first 22 MBA degrees are awarded.

Event: Canada's first National Gymnastic School is run at the Tait McKenzie Physical Education centre. The school is jointly sponsored by the York Department of Physical Education and the Central Ontario Gymnastic Association. Approximately 200 athletes attend the one-week course.

Event: There are 3 770 full-time students registered at the York and Glendon campuses. Over the course of the 1967 - 1968 academic year full-time York staff and faculty grows from 340 to 1220.
At Glendon, there are 508 students in years one and two of the College programme, and the faculty grows from 39 to 65 full-time staff members. The bilingual aspect of the College is strengthened. There are curricular reforms in the General Honours and Special Honours programs. The General Education course becomes more flexible, with a wider range of course options.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers graduate courses in English, Geography, Mathematics, Political Science and Sociology for the first time. There are 138 students enrolled in the full-time graduate program and 34 students pursuing part-time studies. The MBA program has 104 full-time and 375 part-time students registered. The Graduate Students Association is established.
Atkinson College has 5 204 registered students and 35 full-time faculty members. The Provincial operating grants formula for universities recognizes part-time students registered in degree courses for the first time.
Approximately 50 students enroll in the B.A/ B.Sc. Honours course in Physical Education. York is the first university to offer undergraduates the choice of two streams within the Physical Education Department.
Winters College, the third Keele Street campus residential college, is opened. (The formal ceremony is held on March 29, 1968.) The Houses in the Residence are named to honour Canadian scientific explorers - Dawson, Fleming, Franquelin, Jolliet, Logan, Palliser, Stefansson, and Tyrrell. Professor Donald S. Rickerd is the Master of the College and Professor Colin Campbell is the Senior Tutor.

Event: The Senate Committee on the Duff-Berdhal Report tables its report with a series of recommendations for reforming the York University Senate. The Report recommends that the Senate be enlarged to include members elected by their peers in the Faculties, and to include student representatives. Senate establishes a Special Senate Committee on the Curriculum and Structure of the Faculty of Fine Arts.

Event: The Frank Gerstein Lecture Series for 1967 are held for four weeks from the 9th of November through the 30th. Its theme is "The University and the New Intellectual Environment." The invited lecturers are Prof. Henry David Aiken of Brandeis University, Prof. Michael Walzer from Harvard University, architect Mr. Arthur Erickson from Vancouver B.C., and Mr. James Dickey, Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress, Washington D.C.

Event: Fall Convocation takes place in Burton Auditorium, on the York Campus. 25 Atkinson College students are granted their Bachelor of Arts degrees, there are 8 post-graduate degrees conferred:5 M.A.s., 1 M.Sc.s, and 2 Ph.Ds. These are York's first postgraduate science degrees to be awarded. The first Ph.D.s are awarded to atomic physicist Gordon W.F. Drake, and chemist Allan Lord. Judith Drake is the first York graduate to receive a Master of Science degree.
Lord C.P. Snow, Pamela Hansford Johnson (Lady Snow,) and Mr. Henry Smith Wingate receive Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees. Lord Snow gives the Convocation address.

This student-organized, and student-run event features prominent French Canadian politicians and businessmen as speakers. The roster includes RenJ Levesque, Claude Ryan, F.R. Scott, Jean-Luc PJpin, and Eric Kierans. The CBC telecasts part of the conference.

Event: At a special meeting, the Senate passes a series of statutes initiating important reforms of the Senate. "The Rules and Procedures of the Senate of York University" are amended. Twelve Senate Committees were established including the Committee on Tenure and Promotion, and the Academic Policy and Planning Committee. Senate membership is changed to include student representatives, and members from each Faculty Council in numbers proportionate to the numbers of full-time professors.
