Event: The Faculty of Arts and Science creates the Division of Humanities, the Division of Social Science, and the Division of Natural Sciences. Professor William Kilbourn is appointed Chairman of the Division of Humanities. The other chairmen are not yet named.

Event: The York University Library has a staff of 11, including 7 professional librarians. The collection consists of 14 882 catalogued books and periodicals. In the course of the 1962-63 academic year, the staff increases to 15 (8 librarians), and 10 763 volumes are added to the collection. By June 1963, there are 25 645 catalogued volumes in the collection and 510 journal subscriptions.

Event: The Faculty Council of Arts and Science is established. Dr. R. O. Earl is appointed Dean of the Faculty. Professor George Tatham is appointed Dean of Students.

Event: Professor Neil M. Morrison is appointed the first Dean of the Joseph E. Atkinson College of York University. Mrs. Alison Mitchell is appointed Assistant to the Dean of the Joseph E. Atkinson College. The Senate gives approval for granting York University Bachelor of Arts degrees to Atkinson College students who have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of 16 courses. Admission requirements for Atkinson students require a minimum grade of 60% on 9 grade 13 papers. Equivalent qualifications from other provincial or international jurisdictions are also accepted. Mature students over 23, who do not have the requirements, may be admitted under special circumstances.

Event: The Campus Planning Committee submits its report, "Preliminary Statement of York University Campus - 1980." The Board of Governors approves the report of the Planning Committee, and gives"approval in principle of the College system, integrated within a central university authority as outlined in the 'Preliminary Statement of York University Campus - 1980' (August 31, 1962) and of the development of the first cluster of colleges, on the understanding that the aggregate facilities required can be provided in a manner to ensure functional efficiency, while maintaining a cost structure approximating a large university of high standards not following the College system."

Event: Dr. Stephen McCarthy, Director of Libraries at Cornell University, is asked to prepare a plan of recommendations for York University Libraries' development and growth. The McCarthy report recommends that York develop a library system consisting of a centralized administration "with a planned and limited pattern of decentralization for services to readers." He suggests that a Science Library be built on the large campus. The Science library would be used as the central library until 1969-1970, when the main university library would be built. The University accepts this plan in principle.

Event: The first York University International Entrance Scholarships are awarded to: Annie Woo, Hong Kong, Governors' Asian Scholarship; Sani Dauda, Northern Nigeria, Governors' African Scholarship; Michael Findlay, Wimbledon, England, Rio Tinto Scholarship.

Event: Lectures begin. 550 students register between September 13 and 18 (300 day students and 250 evening students.) There are 48 faculty members. Library staff is increased to 15, including 8 professional librarians.
The Athletic Directorate, an athletic policy-making body of faculty and students, is established. The first Men's Intramural Athletic Council and Women's Intramural Athletic Council are formed. York joins the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association. This is the first year that York participates in intercollegiate competitions in golf, tennis, sailing, table tennis, fencing, hockey basketball and skiing. J. Howard Langille is appointed Director of Athletics and Recreation.
The first student newspaper, Pro Tem, is published. The editors are Harold Levy and John Corvese.
The first York University student handbook, Aardvark, is produced for the 1962/63 academic year. The editors are John Corvese, G.H. Rust D'Eye, and P.J. Spencer. The clubs listed in Aardvark include: The Amoeba Watcher's Society, the Art Club, The Debating Society, The Fencing Club, Le Cercle Francais, The Humanities Club, The Ski Club, The Table Tennis Club, The York Choir, The Yorkestra, The York University Film Society, the Intra-Varsity Christian Fellowship, and The United Nations Club.

Event: Evening lectures begin as Atkinson College offers its first three courses, "Introductory English", "Introductory Mathematics", and "Humanities I: The Roots of Western Culture" The courses are taught by Professors H.K. Girling, Alice W. Turner, and William W, Kilbourn, respectively. The initial Atkinson enrolment is 287 students.

Event: The Frank Gerstein Charitable Foundation donates $4 500 to support the 1963 York Invitation Lecture Series to be held in January and February 1963. Henceforth, the Lecture series is called "The Gerstein Lectures."

Event: A press conference is held to announce that the Province of Ontario has granted York University 475 acres of land held jointly by the federal and provincial governments, in northwest Metropolitan Toronto, at the south west corner of Keele Street and Steeles Avenue, for a campus. The land grant is subsequently increased to 600 acres.

Event: The UPACE (University Planners, Architects and Consulting Engineers) group, a joint venture of three prominent architectural firms: Gordson S. Adamson & Associates, John B. Parkin Associates, and Shore and Moffat and Partners, is asked to develop a Master Plan for York University and to design initial buildings for the new campus. Dr. Thomas Howarth, the architect-planner for the Glendon Hall site and Director of the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto, is the architect-consultant/adviser for the Board of Governors. Professor Hideo Sasaki, the Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture, Harvard University, is hired to act as a consultant to UPACE on campus planning. At a later stage other architects will be asked to participate in the design of future buildings.

Event: Construction begins on the Glendon Hall Library building. The architects are Allward and Gouinlock. This is the first of the "second stage building projects" for Glendon campus. Other second stage projects include: the extension of York Hall (Architects: Morani, Morris and Allan); the first student residence (Architects Mathers and Haldenby); the Field House (Architects Allward and Gouinlock); and the Central Services Building, to be built over the Coach House (Architect: Morani, Morris and Allan).

Event: The Department of Information and development publish the "York University Gazette". It summarizes Board and Senate actions and decisions, lists faculty publications, public speaking engagements, and University events. Initially published six times a year, it later becomes the York Gazette, the official house organ of the university.

Event: York University receives a $125 000 grant from the Fund for the Advancement of Education (an organization founded by the Ford Foundation) to assist the university to develop new curriculum. (The grant will be matched by a fund made up of contributions from private citizens in Toronto.) The new curriculum "will provide broad, comprehensive courses in the Humanities, the Social Sciences and the Natural Science for all York students in their first two years of study. ... The aim is to provide the student with a broad, general program of study before he begins to specialize."
