Libby Scheier (1931- ), writer, was born in Brooklyn, New York, and educated at Sarah Lawrence College (B.A. 1968) and Student University of New York (M.A., 1971). She moved to Toronto in 1975 after living in France, California, and Israel. Scheier worked as an editor and copy editor for several science journals and has been contributing editor to Paragraph: The Fiction Magazine and poetry editor of Poetry Toronto. Her journalistic work has appeared in the Globe and Mail, This magazine, Canadian Form, and Quarry. From 1988 to 1994, Scheier taught creative writing, Canadian literature, and Women's studies courses at York University, Toronto, and has been the founder/director of the Toronto Writing Workshop since 1994. Scheier's creative works include: The Larger Life (1983), Second Nature (1986), SKY - A Poem in Four Pieces (1990), Saints and Runners - Stories and a Novella (1993), and Kaddish for My Father (1999). Her work has also appeared in such anthologies as Women on War (1988), Poetry by Canadian Women (1989), and Language in Her Eye (1993).
The fonds consists of: manuscripts and publication files for Scheier's works including: Saints and Runners, SKY, Second Nature, and Language in Her Eye; political papers and files; files related to the Writers Union of Canada; papers written by others and correspondence between Scheier and others; and graphic materials such as posters, photographs, and paintings.
