Metadata Policy: Accessibility Notes

Background:  

  • In 2018 the proposal (MARC PROPOSAL NO. 2018-03) to incorporate accessibility notes into MARC 21 was approved. 
  • As a result of the approval of marc proposal no. 2018-03; Marc field 341 and 532 were created 
  • MARC field 341 Accessibility Content provides information regarding the modes of access to the content including the primary and alternative modes of access 
  • MARC field 532 Accessibility Note provides textual information describing the accessibility features and deficiencies of a resource, including technical details relating to accessibility features. This field may be used to expand on or to qualify data in field 341 (Accessibility Content). 

 Rationale

  • The purpose of this policy is to assist with York University Libraries commitment to principles of equity diversity and inclusion in addition to compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act (AODA) and York University Libraries participation in the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled Pilot Project

Policy Statement

  • Copy cataloguing: 
    • Leave MARC 341 Accessibility Content field and MARC 532 Accessibility Notes field in copy cataloguing 
    • Do not add MARC 341 and 532 fields 
  • Original cataloguing: 
    • Add MARC 341 Accessibility Content field and MARC 532 Accessibility Notes field when necessary 
  • Vendor records for shelf ready material although the Metadata Policy Group recommends reviewing contracts with stipulation to include these MARC fields 341 and 532 to the required fields in catalogue records
  • Vendor records for locally loaded electronic resources Metadata Policy Group recommends that vendors at MARC fields 341 and 532 to catalogue records
