General Policies
- All machines and equipment are open to most York University community members. You do not need to be any specific faculty to use the space! Our services may occasionally be reserved by specific courses or projects, affecting their availability. Faculty members wishing to reserve our spaces for group or class use should contact us to make arrangements.
- Use our equipment and spaces carefully, and minimize wear and tear.
- The person whose name is associated with an equipment loan or space booking is liable for any damage of equipment, including any damage caused by guests or other members of their group.
- Beginners and tinkerers are always welcome! If you are unsure how to use equipment or tools while in our spaces, don't hesitate to ask for help or book a consultation!

Eligibility
York undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, part-time and full-time (collectively,
“Patrons”), are eligible to use the Makerspace. Guests are not permitted. For Community group
requests, please email: mmcl@yorku.ca
- Access may be denied, revoked or limited at any time at the discretion of Makerspace staff.
- All Makerspace rules shall be enforced by Makerspace staff. uses include creating content that is:
- Illegal under provincial or federal law (e.g., gun parts, weapons, illicit drug paraphernalia).
- Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the wellbeing of others.
- Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment and/or York University.
- In violation of another's intellectual property rights (e.g., copyrighted, patented, or trademarked materials).
Compliance with Makerspace Rules
- It is a condition to your entry into and use of the Makerspace and equipment that you agree to these rules and understand that your failure to do so may result in Makerspace privileges being suspended at the discretion of Makerspace staff.
- You may only enter the Makerspace and operate the equipment if you have completed
and comply with all applicable training, safety, rules, guidelines and other requirements
of the Makerspace and for operation of the equipment. - No food or drink is permitted. Bottled water or other closed lid containers are allowed in
the Makerspace but must be kept away from all equipment. - You acknowledge that the Makerspace contains equipment that carries risks. You enter
the Makerspace and use the equipment at your own risk. - You may only use the equipment in a safe manner and according to all directions from
Makerspace staff and signage, including the use of safety and protective gear for each type
of equipment (e.g. gloves, protective glasses, hearing protection, tying up long hair,
removing jewelry). - You may not tamper with or modify any equipment, remove any machine guards or safety
equipment, or abuse or willfully damage equipment or the Makerspace in any way. - You must be considerate of other Patrons using the Makerspace at all times.
- You will not infringe any person's intellectual property rights, including copyright,
trademark and patent, or any other rights, including privacy and publicity rights, when
using the Makerspace equipment and software. - To the maximum extent permitted by law, York University disclaims all liability, including
for infringement of intellectual property rights, negligence and loss or damage to your
person or property, and you release York University, and its Governors, officers,
employees and agents from claims caused by your failure to comply with any directions,
rules, guidelines, or requirements of the Makerspace or any improper use of the
Makerspace or equipment
Lawful Use Only
- You may only use the Makerspace for lawful purposes.
- Prohibited uses include creating projects that are, without limitation:
o Illegal under provincial or federal law (e.g., gun parts, weapons of any kind, drug
paraphernalia).
o Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or that pose an immediate threat to the wellbeing of
others.
o Obscene or otherwise inappropriate or objectionable for the library environment
and/or York University.
o Generally, for commercial purposes, at the discretion of Makerspace staff.
o In violation of another person’s rights, including intellectual property and proprietary
rights (i.e., items subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection).
Weapons, Depictions and Vulgar Imagery
- Projects deemed to have obscene, hateful or vulgar imagery will be declined or cancelled
- by the Makerspace
- Such imagery includes but is not limited to:
- Hate symbols
- Hateful messages
- Calls to violence
- Nudity
- Obscene language or gestures
- Projects that denote affiliation to or representation of hateful or violent groups will also
be declined by the Makerspace.
- Weapons in whole or in part are not permitted.
- Cosplay, props and tabletop miniatures or figures with model weaponry requests
will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and if approved, will be printed in a
bright colored filament such as pink or orange to further indicate its prop nature

Staff Discretion
- Whether your project meets the above criteria is solely within the discretion of
- Makerspace staff. For specific academic projects that fall outside the above criteria,
- faculty can contact the MMCL at mmcl@yorku.ca to discuss possible exceptions.
- Makerspace staff may cancel projects at any time at their discretion.
- Makerspace staff have sole discretion of equipment to be used for each project and may
interrupt or interchange equipment at any time
Job Quality
- Makerspace staff are available for limited assistance and advice on methods but cannot
- guarantee success.
- All projects must be initiated by the Patron who made the booking, with Makerspace staff
guidance. - You must stay for the first layer of a 3d print to ensure proper bed adhesion.
- You must supervise the use of advanced fabrication machines at all times. Failure to do
so will result in premature cancellation of your project.
Materials
- You may only use approved materials for your project, provided or verified by
- Makerspace staff.
- You are not permitted to bring into the Makerspace outside materials without prior
approval. - Only the Makerspace coordinator or assistant may approve materials to be used.
Payment
- You will be charged only for the materials that are used for the project.
- Makerspace staff will provide you with a price quote before any project is initiated. The
project will begin only upon your approval of the quote. - You will have an opportunity to inspect the project after completion before agreeing to
pay the quoted price. - If you decline or do not retrieve the project within 30 days, the project will be deemed
abandoned. - Makerspace staff may donate, recycle, keep or dispose of abandoned projects, at their
discretion. - Payments are processed at the service desk. You must present a receipt to the
Makerspace staff to claim the project.
Consent
- Makerspace staff may request permission to photograph projects for promoting, publicizing or explaining the Makerspace, York University and its activities for administrative, educational, academic or research purposes
Privacy
- Photography and filming in the Makerspace is only permitted in narrow circumstances. You may only capture yourself and/or your work and must respect the privacy and work of others by not recording them (including in the background of shots) without consent.
Equipment Loans
- Equipment reservations must be made under the name of the person who will pick up and return equipment. You may not pick up equipment for another person, and you may not return equipment on behalf of someone else.
- Ensure that all equipment kits are complete and in working order before leaving the Library.
- When existing equipment loans are overdue, no new equipment loans will be permitted.
- Equipment will not be "checked in" on return unless kits are complete, because an incomplete kit cannot be loaned to anyone else. There are no exceptions to this rule. Make sure to keep track of small accessories like memory cards and power adapters!
- Equipment may be borrowed for up to 7 days (depending on availability), with no automatic renewal permitted. Requests for loan extensions are only granted under extenuating circumstances; requests for extensions should be sent, along with justification, to mmcl@yorku.ca.
- Use the equipment at your own risk. The Library takes no responsibility for student work or materials damaged due to faulty equipment.
- Notify a Makerspace staff member immediately if the equipment is not working properly.
- Ensure that all equipment is returned on time and to pay any assessed late fees, if required. Late fees are charged at $5 per item per day.
- If equipment is damaged or stolen under the care of a borrower, this person is financially responsible for the full replacement cost. The York University Libraries digital scholarship team oversees assessing the repair or replacement cost and should be contacted at mmcl@yorku.ca.
